The Intensive English Program (IEP)
GST Language Center offers a full-time, year-round English Language Program, which provides an intensive program of language training program for nonnative English speaking students from around the world. It is primarily designed to provide our students with instructional support that will enable them to participate fully in their educational experience in our school and in their social lives in the United States and/or to improve personal prospects for business or personal reasons. The objectives of our program are to develop basic oral communication skills and to develop proficiency in the language domains of grammar, listening, speaking, reading, and writing, to develop competence in intercultural interactions, and to encourage participation in the full range of instructional activities in the regular education curriculum and in extracurricular activities that foster understanding American culture.
The 20 hour per week program includes training in reading and writing, oral communication skills, listening and speaking, and grammar.
This program is designed to provide non-native English speaking students with dramatically improved language skills by providing a small student/teacher ratio 15 to 1, and by providing a standardized, integrated, intensive, and structure-based curriculum. From level 3 on, there is a recommended list of field trips, guest speaker, films, music, and resources to add to the student’s overall language education.
To be admitted, prospective students must be at least 18 years of age, and be literate in their native language. Applicants are also required to take a written placement test and appear at a personal interview. All students are placed at a level consistent with their determined oral and written language skills.
The ESL program is divided into 6 separate levels.
Each level is 160 clock hours long.
